Castles of Bellinzona

For centuries a fortified barrier guarding the gateway to the Alps – now an impressive UNESCO World Heritage site. The Three Castles of Bellinzona (the Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro) are among the finest examples of medieval fortification in the entire Alps. The castles are strategically located where the River Ticino valley narrows at the southern entrance to the Alpine passes of the St. Gotthard, San Bernadino, Lukmanier and Nufenen.
